A New York police officer just risked her life to save a boy after she witnessed him jump off a highway overpass.

Officer Jessie Ferreira Cavallo was driving to work last Friday when she noticed a boy running along the side of the Saw Mill River Parkway in Yonkers, New York. She was stunned to see the boy climb over the guardrail and jump off the overpass. Without hesitating, Cavallo stopped her car, ran to the overpass, and jumped over it herself.

“Everything was happening so fast, and I think my adrenaline was pumping so high,” Cavallo said. “I just knew, when I looked down and saw him … he looked dead. I couldn’t see anything other than blood. I thought to myself, ‘He needs help. I need to help him.'”

A second woman wearing a military uniform stopped to help as well, and she and Cavallo proceeded to perform CPR on the boy. The boy was eventually rushed to the hospital with multiple broken bones, but he is expected to survive.

It wasn’t until the next day that Cavallo was really hit with what she had done.

“Friday, after this whole thing happened, I went to work and worked to 11 p.m.,” she said. “I didn’t realize what was going on until yesterday. That’s when it hit me. I didn’t realize how high it was. It seemed doable. It didn’t seem that high. I thought I jumped over a brick wall, or a cement barrier. It was so fast. It was more like tunnel vision. I saw the boy and I needed to get to him. I didn’t see anything else.”

Westchester County Police spokeswoman Kieran O’Leary explained that the boy had run away from an organization that helps kids with special needs or behavioral issues. Staffers were trying to speak to him when they caught up to him on the highway, but he fled on foot and jumped over the overpass.

Cavallo would now like to see the boy so she can talk to him herself.

“I just hope that he’s doing well,” she said. “I just want to give him a hug.”
