The Chicago White Sox may have just found themselves an unlikely new recruit whose skills on the field are absolutely divine!

Sister Mary Jo Sobieck, of Marian Catholic High School in suburban Chicago Heights, took the field at Guaranteed Rate Field last Saturday to throw a ceremonial first pitch that left the crowd stunned. Nobody expected her to throw a pitch this good!

“I said, ‘Can you play for us?’“ White Sox manager Rick Renteria said of the nun. “She said, ‘Sure.’ Seems to be a really nice lady.”

“She stepped back at about 45 feet, and threw a bullet,” Renteria added.

Even Chicago right-hander Lucas Giolito, who caught Sister Mary Jo’s pitch, was floored by it.

“That was awesome,” he said. “She had a whole routine. She had it planned out. I was just lucky to be back there. She threw a perfect pitch.”

“I had to do something to take my mind off it,” the nun said of her move. “I mean, it’s too awkward to just stand and throw from the jump. So I had to do a little something to put me in motion.”

Perhaps the White Sox could have used Sister Mary Jo during their actual game, as it did not go so well for them. They ended up losing to last-place Kansas City Royals 3-1.
