A little girl from Philadelphia who was battling an inoperable brain tumor has now been declared completely healthy three years after she received a kiss from the pope.

Gianna Masciantonio spent the first six months of her life in hospice care, and she was eventually diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. When Pope Francis Papal visited the city in 2015, a member of the Swiss guard hoisted the child up in their arms, and she received a kiss from the pope.

At the time, the pope did not know about Gianna’s diagnosis of histiocytosis, which caused a dangerous tumor to grow on her brain stem. Three years later, Gianna is completely recovered and is getting ready to start preschool.

“She’s blown our expectations out of the water in terms of how she’s doing,” said Dr. Amish Shah, a pediatric neuro-oncologist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “She’s resilient, and she’s tough, and instead of taking all this as something to be fearful of,  she’s really taking this in stride.”

To thank the hospital for saving their daughter, the foundation that was started by Gianna’s parents is donating $50,000 to aid in child care and research. Joey Masciantonio, Gianna’s father, opened up about how important this hospital is to him.

“We just want to help the kids,” he said. “Seeing your kid run around and seeing her doing the things she’s doing with what they told us from the beginning is amazing.”

God bless this amazing little girl, and may she have many happy and healthy years to come! Find out more about her story in the video below.
