Amelia Milling is a 21 year-old woman who happens to be deaf, but she has never let this hold her back from her passion of hiking. Milling has travelled all over the world to go on various adventures, and earlier this summer, she headed to Alaska to complete the Crow Pass Trail in Chugach State Park.

Milling planned for the hike to take three days, but just four miles into it, she suffered a massive fall down the mountain. Milling fell 300 feet before she hit a large boulder, and she then fell an additional 400 feet before finally coming to a stop. She suffered a serious leg injury in the fall, and she knew that it would be difficult to get up and hike to safety.

As Milling looked over her injury, she saw a mysterious white figure walking towards her. She immediately panicked, as she thought it was a wolf. It was only when the figure got closer that she realized it was a husky!

Milling saw on the dog’s tag that his name was Nanook, and it quickly became clear that he was there to help her.

Nanook led Milling back up to the hiking trail and spent the entire day with her. He even cuddled with her that night to make sure that she stayed warm. The next day, the trail got even tougher, and the two found themselves at a freezing river. Milling stepped in to try and cross, but the current quickly started pulling her under. Undeterred, Nanook rescued her once again by pulling her to safety!

As soon as they got back on dry land, Milling was able to use her “SOS” signal on her satellite phone to call for help. Nanook stayed with her until Alaska State Troopers came in their helicopter to take her to the hospital.

Milling later learned that Nanook lives with his owner near the Crow Pass Trail, and that he loves helping hikers like her! In fact, he has rescued many other hikers who found themselves in dangerous situations.

“Nookie was nothing short of a modern-day, Lassie (type) hero,” Alaska State Trooper Lt. Eric Olsen, one of the officers who arrived to help Milling.

This is one incredible dog! Find out more about his daring rescue of Milling in the video below, and SHARE this story so your friends and family can see this as well!
