Encarna Alés is a 74 year-old grandmother who was taken out of school when she was 8, so to this day, she cannot read or write.

While she has managed to get through life without these skills, the main difficulty it presents is that Encarna cannot read her friends’ and family’s names in a contact book. This is particularly tough for her, since she loves to call her loved ones on the phone.

Thankfully, Encarna has a loving grandson who came up with a unique solution to deal with her illiteracy. Since Pedro Ortega was 11 years-old, he has been drawing small doodles for his grandmother’s contact phone numbers so that she can identify them based on the drawing. For the last twenty years, Pedro has been adding doodles to her contact book!

“Every time I’m back home, I sit down and add new drawings for her,” the 31-year-old said. “It’s become something special between the two of us.”

While it’s easy to think of drawings for people like doctors or dentists, Pedro has come up with ways to identify Encarna’s personal connections as well.

When it comes time to make a doodle for a new connection, Encarna picks an object that reminds her of the acquaintance, such as a bundle of asparagus or a daisy.

“On every page and for every number, I would draw a picture that she felt would identify the person she wanted to call,” Pedro said.

“It was something we thought of together,” he added. “She says something unique about every person and I draw it out for her. It’s a system we’ve had for twenty years.”

Pedro has posted images of his doodles on social media, and they have since gone viral.

Encarna is one lucky woman to have such an amazing and loving grandson! SHARE this story so your friends and family can see this as well!
