Hillary Harris had been searching for her birth family for years. She had learned that she had a half-sister named Dawn Johnson and she had been searching for her half sister since she found out they shared the same father.

Hillary was adopted as an infant and had found three other half siblings using social media, but she hadn’t had any luck finding Dawn. Hillary, 31, from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, says she was about to give up. That is until she saw a couple unloading a moving van into the house next door.

Hillary asked her husband, Lance, if he had met them. Hillary had learned that the women’s first name was Dawn and she was from the same town where Dawn Johnson had lived according to the obituary of their biological father. Hillary asked her husband, “What if she’s my sister?” Then they both laughed doubting that could ever be possible.

Two months later a delivery truck showed up to the house and delivered an order of shingles. On top of the tarp was a sign with the last name Johnson on it. Hillary immediately called her husband with the news. “Well, that’s it,” Lance said. “We’re going to go over and talk to her.”

Even knowing that it could be her sister, Hillary didn’t have the nerve to ask about her family history. “I was worried about rejection,” said Hillary. Finally, Hillary texted her and asked a question about her birth father. Dawn replied, “Why are you asking that?” Hillary decided to go for it.

She asked Dawn who her father was, and sure enough, it was Wayne Clouse, who was also Hillary’s father. Hillary immediately called her and explained why she had asked. The two spent hours on the phone that night laughing and crying. Neither could believe that they were sisters and living right next door to each other.

Dawn had been raised by her step father, and although she had always known about her birth father, she didn’t meet him until she was 18. She says it never occurred to her that he might have other kids that would be her siblings.

When Dawn and her husband Kurt decided to move to Eau Claire, they never dreamed they would end up living right next door to her sister. “We are literally 20 feet apart,” says Dawn. “We even share a driveway.”

“We’re pretty much inseparable now and we know this was meant to be,” says Hillary. “Our story is living proof that it pays not to give up.”
