A senior Boxer dog was rescued and put up for adoption by workers at the Carolina Boxer Rescue, which serves both the Carolinas and parts of Virginia. Though the boxer dog had a sweet personality, she found herself unwanted simply because she was deaf.

Veteran Tom Cannone and his wife Jane were surfing the web looking for a dog to adopt when they came upon photos of the Boxer, and they immediately fell in love with her.

Tom and Jane drove down from their Virginia home to adopt the Boxer, as they knew right away that they had to have her. They were undeterred by the fact that the dog was deaf, and they ended up naming her Boombox! The perky canine had no problem adapting to her forever home and she quickly bonded with the Cannones.

When Tom and Jane brought Boombox to veterinarian Layne Brett, he decided to conduct an experiment that would change everything. Layne gave Boombox a hand motion that means “sit” in dog sign language, and she immediately complied. It was only then that everyone realized that Boombox is fluent in dog sign language!

Jane explained that Boombox knew all of the signs that the veterinarian gave her, showing that she became fluent in dog sign language before she was rescued.

“When we hold a finger up and motion to her, she knows it’s time for her walk,” Jane said.

These days, Boombox keeps her eyes on her owners at all times, waiting to see what sign they will give her. The dog’s favorite sign is the one for “walk!”

“Other dogs in the neighborhood are barking, and people ask me how I keep Boombox quiet,” Jane said. “I just tell them that she obeys.”
