Tony Bennett is just shy of turning 92 years old, but last Tuesday night he performed to a sold-out crowd at the Atlanta Symphony Hall. He extended his arms toward the crowd and smiled with pure joy as he looked out at the crowd.

He sang 70 minutes worth of masterworks from Gershwin, Jerome Kern, and Johnny Mercer and rounded the stage several times to spotlight members of his quartet. He even closed the show with his own rendition of “Fly Me to the Moon” sans microphone, but his voice sailed into the upper decks with ease.

The fact that Bennet is still able to get out there and perform numerous shows a year at his age is nothing short of a miracle. He still sounds solid, although there were a few awkward notes and a muffled lyric or two.

Still, he’s a testament to stamina and dedication that is rarely seen anymore. Clad in an elegant suit and a small mustache on his upper lip, Bennett clasped the microphone with both hands and closed his eyes from time to time as he sang, obviously enjoying performing for his beloved fans.

He isn’t much of a talker on stage, and instead, prefers to plow right through his set of songs. Throughout much of the show he planted himself in front of the curve of Tom Rainer’s piano, and leaned against it a few times for support.

Still, he managed to make it look effortlessly cool with a foot cross or hand in his pocket. While most singers save their signature song for the end of the set, Bennett unveiled “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” in the middle of the show.

Instead, at the end, he unveiled his rendition of “Fly Me to the Moon” to the delight of his audience. It’s truly inspiring that Tony Bennett, at the age of 91, is still as good as ever.
