The new Duchess of Sussex has found herself in the center of political row during her first ever official royal visit to Ireland. After she and Irish Senator Catherine Noone of Fine Gael tweeted about their interaction, Meghan Markle may be in the hot seat once again.

Members of the royal family are not supposed to offer their opinion on matters of politics and should be politically neutral at all times. However, the Senator tweeted, “A pleasure to meet Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex at the British Ambassador’s Residence this evening.”

The tweet went on to explain that she and the Duchess had discussed the recent referendum result and Meghan reportedly told her that she was pleased to see the result. The interaction she had with the Duchess was in regard’s to Ireland’s vote to legalize abortion.

In May, Ireland voted to legalize abortion and repeal the Eighth Amendment which was included in the 1983 Constitution that recognized equal right to life for the mother and the unborn child. One Twitter user fired back at the Senator stating that she might have landed the Duchess in hot water, and other users quickly jumped in.

It didn’t take long before the Senator replied that the Duchess seemed pleased, but that she was very measured and not political at all. Later in the evening she deleted the tweets completely and left a much simpler message with no suggestion of Markle breaking the rules.

This isn’t the first time Markle has been in the hot seat when it comes to discussing politics. Earlier this year she made comments about women’s empowerment at a Women’s Foundation panel.

Do you think Meghan broke the rules, or should she have the right, even as a royal, to speak her mind? Share this story with your friends and see what they think too.
