Amelia Milling is a fearless 21 year-old who recently embarked on a hike through Crow Pass Trail in Chugach State Park, which is located around 30 miles outside of Anchorage, Alaska. Amelia, who happens to be deaf, was just four miles into her hike when her day took a surprising turn.

One of Amelia’s trekking poles snapped without any warning, causing her to lose her balance and fall 300 feet down a snowy portion of the mountain before she hit a large boulder. After hitting the boulder, Amelia fell an additional 300 to 400 feet further down.

As Amelia was assessing her injuries, she noticed what looked like a large white wolf walking towards her. It was only when the animal got closer to her that she noticed a collar around his neck and realized that the “wolf” was actually someone’s dog. Amelia immediately knew that this white husky was there to help her!

The dog’s collar read “Nanook,” and Amelia set off with him on the trail before stopping to make camp overnight. Nanook stayed right by her side, and it wasn’t until later that Amelia learned he was actually a trail guide.

The next day, Amelia tried to cross a river, but the current was too strong and she started to get pulled under. Nanook refused to give up on her, using her backpack strap to pull her out of the water. When she was finally safely back on land, Amelia pulled out her SPOT beacon, a GPS device to alert rescuers of her location, and the Alaska State Troopers rushed to help her.

Amelia now calls Nanook her hero, as she does not believe she would have survived without his help! Nanook’s owners were not surprised when they heard what he had done, since this was not the first life he saved! The dog had previously saved a little girl who had become trapped in the river.
