One of the most heartbreaking statistics you can find in this country is that around 670,000 dogs are euthanized every year, and many of them are put to death because of overpopulation and a lack of resources to help them.

Tracy and Scott Whyatt have been trying to lower this statistic since 2011, when they started taking dogs from overfilled shelters in Texas to other states as part of an initiative that was launched by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The initiative aims to rescue dogs from high-kill shelters and bring them to places where they are more likely to be adopted.

Tracy and Scott now dedicate virtually all of their time to this effort, and they have found homes for more than 3,700 dogs who would otherwise have been euthanized in the past six years.

The couple has since launched the organization Tracy’s Dogs, which has allowed them to turn this venture into a full time job.

Tracy and Scott travel to high-kill shelters near San Antonio, Texas, rescue the dogs there, and bring the animals back to their facility, where they clean them up and rehabilitate them. Once they have done that, they load the dogs into their trailer and head to PetSmart parking lots in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., and Florida.

The dogs’ pre-screened owners are in the parking lots waiting for them, and they can’t wait to meet their new pets!

“We had adopted through Tracy’s Dogs before and we had a great experience with them, and we wanted to adopt again through them,” said one man waiting for the trailer to pull up. “There are so many dogs out there who need a home that we wanted to help out.”
