Slot machines are one of the most popular spots in a casino. They have bright flashing lights, and are simple to use. But there’s a fascinating story behind slot machines. How they began and how they’ve evolved over time is a unique part of history.

These machines began with a car mechanic in San Francisco, California, named Charles Fey. In 1894, he began developing the machine in his basement. He wanted an automatic system to play poker with and instead came up with the mother to the slot machine.

The machine featured three spinning wheels and was painted with card symbols. The wheels would randomly land on the symbols when spun and if all matched the user won. The machine worked with fully mechanical components and was operated by pulling a lever on the side. Fey rented the machine to his local pub and the patrons loved it.

His invention was a hit and multiple companies tried to buy the rights to his machine, but Fey wouldn’t sell. Companies began making their own machines and eventually parts of the machine were replaced with electrical components.

The first completely electronic slot machine was built in 1975 by the Fortune Coin Company. The 20th century found new ways for casinos to do business and the internet provided instant access to information. Along with that came software programs that launched the first online casinos.

Paying slots have become one of the most popular places in and out of a casino. They provide hours of entertainment, and although million dollar payouts aren’t common, they do happen. At the Excalibur Casino in Las Vegas, a 25-year-old man won $39.7 million dollars while he was passing time waiting to attend a basketball game.

Slot machines have been entertaining and fascinating us for years. Their history of innovation, enchantment, and technology has captured our attention since Fey first introduced his slot machine. It doesn’t look like the use and love of slot machines will slow down anytime soon.
