When Janine DeMartini decided to adopt a shelter cat, she had no idea that the cat was about to change her family’s life forever.

It all started when Janine agreed to foster a cat named Herbie from Staten Island Hope Animal Rescue, and she immediately found him to be gentle, quiet, and loving.

One night, Janine was in bed trying to sleep when Herbie began meowing loudly, which was unusual for a mellow cat like him. She tried to ignore him at first, but when he jumped on her bed and began aggressively meowing at her, she realized something was wrong.

When Janine finally got up, Herbie headed for the door and turned around as if to tell her, “follow me!”

“I was so tired and I was like, all right, he’s just being a cat. But something said this is not his personality. There’s something wrong,” she said, adding that she followed Herbie.

The cat led Janine to her baby daughter’s room, and when she opened the door, she came upon a horrifying sight.

Janine found her baby daughter’s face covered with a blanket, and she was making “smothering noises.” The girl had rolled over in her sleep and was being suffocated by her blanket!

Moving fast, Herbie jumped into the crib and started “clawing” at and pulling off the blanket from the little baby’s face.

Had Herbie not alerted Janine, her baby daughter Isabella likely would have died.

“He saved my daughter,” said the grateful mother. “Herbie really is the hero.”
