Police have just arrested two men who were caught transporting enough fentanyl through Nebraska to kill more than 10 times the state’s entire population.

A state trooper stopped Nelson Nicolas Nunez-Acosta, 52, and Felipe Genao Minaya, 47, as they were driving in a tractor-trailer on eastbound I-80 near Kearney, Nebraska. The trooper ended up finding 118 pounds of fentanyl inside a hidden compartment in the trailer.

This synthetic opioid is 40 to 50 times stronger than heroin, and it is so powerful that only 2 milligrams can prove deadly. Experts estimate that the stash seized on April 26 is enough to kill more than 26 million people. Only 1.9 million people live in the entire state of Nebraska!

Nunez-Acosta and Minaya, who each hail from Newark, New Jersey, are facing life in prison after being charged with possessing more than 400 grams of fentanyl with intent to distribute it.

United States Attorney Joe Kelly issued a press release praising the troopers who took these men in.

“The diligence of these two Troopers is incredible.” Kelly said in the release. “The interdiction of these opioids saved countless lives. This is a multi-faceted problem that we are addressing through enforcement, prevention and treatment. This is an exceptional example of the enforcement work making our streets safer.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions praised the officers as well.

” I have no doubt that these outstanding law enforcement officers have saved lives — and that this case will help us get closer to ending this unprecedented drug epidemic,” Sessions said.

Thank God these officers were able to catch these men before anyone was hurt!
