Feral peacocks in Canada have caused an uproar in some neighborhoods. The beautiful feathered creatures are attacking cars when they see their reflections in the shiny surface of some shiny dark colored cars and the owners of the cars don’t appreciate the damage that they’re leaving behind.

In addition to the damage that the peacocks are doing, the residents of Surrey in British Columbia say the birds are loud. “With the dark colored cars, they can see their reflection fairly clearly, so they mistake that as another peacock and have at it,” said Ryan Cragg. “They’ll get the front panel, the side panel, the rear panel, and then work around to the other side.”

The issue has been going on for months with some residents going to extremes and chopping down trees that hold peafowl nests. One resident subsequently received a $1,000 fine. The city says they will continue to fine people who feed the birds but won’t do anything else to get rid of them.

Cragg says that the shrieking of the peacocks is like “living with a colicky baby from March all the way through to October.” That part of the year is the peacock mating season, which leads to piercing mating calls.
