Meghan Markle had her first joint appearance with Queen Elizabeth on Thursday, but unfortunately for her, not everything went quite according to plan.

Meghan headed to Cheshire with her new grandmother-in-law onboard the royal train, and when they stepped off of it, the two women were escorted to a waiting car. Meghan slipped up when they got to the vehicle, however, and an awkward moment ensued.

Video footage shows Meghan, 36, first offering the Queen to get in the car first. A clearly-flustered Meghan then suggests that they switch around and asks her, “What’s your preference?”

It is believed that Meghan offered to let the monarch go in first because the Queen likes to sit behind the driver’s seat in cars.

“The Queen always sits behind the driver,” said etiquette expert William Hanson. “This is just a case of habit not protocol (protocol actually says the most important person sits diagonally behind the driver) but the Queen has always preferred being directly behind whoever is driving her.”

This serves as a reminder that being a royal is not all fun and games. Now that she is a member of the royal family, there are a ton of rules of royal etiquette that Meghan must memorize and follow at all times, lest she offend the Queen.
