Renate Stumpf was only 18 years-old when she first met Louis Demetriades at an Army base in Germany back in 1959. At the time, he was an 18 year-old soldier and she was a kitchen worker on the base. It was love at first sight for the two of them, and it wasn’t long before they got married.

After their marriage, Renate and Louis moved to the United States and had three children together, but they struggled financially. Renate could barely speak English at the time, and she felt isolated and homesick in the U.S. Louis and her began arguing all the time, and they finally divorced 13 years after their marriage.

Years and years went by, and both Renate and Louis married other people and moved to different states. After their respective second spouses passed away, Renate and Louis reconnected on Facebook. To the surprise of everyone, Renate and Louis rekindled their romance over the course of a series of long-distance phone calls.

One day, Renate was working at her job as a Walmart greeter when she turned to see the surprise of her life: Louis had driven 286 miles from Memphis, Tennessee to Fort Smith, Arkansas just to see her, as he had something he needed to ask her in person. When Renate heard what he had to say, she immediately burst into tears, as it was a question she never expected to hear come out of her ex-husband’s mouth!
