Most Hollywood stars end up being financially set for life thanks to their lucrative movie and television deals. In some cases, however, bad life decisions have led to celebrities losing everything and dying penniless.

We’ve compiled six of the saddest cases of celebrities who lost everything and died without a penny to their names.

Judy Garland

Best known for her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, Garland was one of the most famous stars of her generation. Sadly, her career went south when she developed a drug addiction, and by the time she passed away in 1969, her house had been repossessed and she was $4 million in debt.

Gary Coleman

During his time starring on the sitcom Diff’rent Strokes, Coleman was one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. Unfortunately, his parents spent virtually all of his money, so he filed a lawsuit against them in 1989. Though this lawsuit resulted in him being awarded $1.3 million, he later filed for bankruptcy and died penniless at the age of 42.

Mickey Rooney

He was one of the most beloved stars of his generation, but after his death in 2014 his estate revealed that his $12 million fortune was reduced to just $18,000.

Billie Holiday

She is remembered as one of the most talented singers of her time, yet she spent all of her money on alcohol and drugs. By the time she passed away in 1959, Holiday had just 70 cents in her bank account and $750 taped to her leg.

Bobby Driscoll

This child star was the voice and visual inspiration for Peter Pan, but his career virtually ended when he hit puberty. Once he lost his Disney contract, Driscoll turned to drugs. His life continued to go downhill until he passed away penniless in 1968 at the age of 31.

Sammy Davis Jr.

He was one of the millionaires in Frank Sinatra’s rat pack, but Davis eventually became addicted to drugs and heavy-spending. At the time of his death in 1990, Davis was massively in debt to the IRS, and his family was forced to auction off some of his possessions to help pay off what he owed.

The unhappy endings to these incredibly talented stars’ lives only serves as a reminder to all of us that fame and wealth is fleeting. No matter how much money and stardom one has, it’s not the path to happiness.
