The world watched in awe last Saturday as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle exchanged vows. Whether you watched the festivities because of the celebrities in attendance, to see what Meghan wore, or just the majesty of the entire event, there was surely something that made you smile.

Many people watched simply to see if and how Prince Harry and Meghan would honor Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana. When television cameras passed by an empty seat next to Prince William, many people believed that seat was left empty to honor the late Princess.

However, fans of the royal family might be disappointed to know that the seat wasn’t empty in honor of Princess Diana. Instead, it was empty in honor of another royal tradition. If you take a closer look at the people surrounding the empty seat, you might realize why the seat was really empty.

Do you see who is sitting behind the empty spot? Queen Elizabeth II is allowed to choose her seat in the chapel and she’s sitting in her favorite spot. However, because it is in the second row, the seat in front of her is left empty so as not to obscure her view of the proceedings in front of her.

Leaving a good view for the Queen isn’t the only reason. Prince William and Prince Charles were both part of the wedding party which meant that would be moving around during the ceremony. It wouldn’t have been right to cut in and out in front of the Queen if she was sitting beside them, so the seat was left empty.

If you think they left Princess Diana out of the wedding festivities though, you would be wrong. Prince Harry intentionally chose forget-me-not flowers from the castle gardens to be included in Meghan’s bouquet because they were one of Diana’s favorite flowers.

Meghan also wore Princess Diana’s beautiful aquamarine ring and happily showed it off as the couple drove off to their evening wedding reception. Lady Sarah Fellowes, one of Princess Diana’s two sisters, read from Song of Solomon during the wedding ceremony.

It appears as if there was plenty of thought put into including the memory of Princess Diana in the wedding ceremony. If you weren’t awake early enough to catch the wedding live, check out the video of Lady Sarah Fellowes as she reads during Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding.
