Olivia Newton John is one of the most beloved stars here in the U.S. and abroad, which is why fans were heartbroken when she announced that her debilitating back pain has become too much for her.

At the age of 68, Olivia cancelled numerous tour dates and tried to get treatment for what she thought was a bad case of sciatica. That’s when doctors gave her the crushing news that her breast cancer had returned.

Olivia was first diagnosed with breast cancer back in 1992, and she thought she had it beat after going through months of chemotherapy, a partial mastectomy and even breast reconstruction surgery. She was devastated to learn that her battle with cancer actually was not over yet.

Three months after being diagnosed, Olivia took to Facebook to post a video giving her fans an update on her health. Her fans were relieved to see that like everything else in her life, Olivia is approaching her cancer battle with a positive attitude.

“I’d like to express my gratitude to all of you who sent such kind and loving messages of support over the past few months,” she said. “Your prayers and well wishes have truly helped me, and continued to lift my spirits. I’m feeling great and so look forward to seeing you soon!”

Experts say that Olivia’s outlook is a good one given the fact that her cancer bouts were so far apart. This indicates that the cancer she has is very treatable.

Olivia has also publicly said that she is using medical marijuana during her cancer treatment, and she is calling for this form of treatment to be more readily available.

“It’s an important part of treatment, and it should be available,” she said. “I use medicinal cannabis, which is really important for pain and healing… It’s a plant that has been maligned for so long, and has so many abilities to heal.”

Olivia would now like to be an advocate for medical marijuana, saying she wants to “champion its use” and push for legalization in Australia.

“It’s an important part of treatment, and it should be available. I use it for the pain and it’s also a medicinal thing to do — the research shows it’s really helpful,” she said.
