Il Gattaro d’Aleppo is a refuge shelter for cats that were abandoned during the war in Syria. The sanctuary was founded by Mohammad Alaa Jaleel, aka the Cat Man of Aleppo, and it is currently home to 80 felines.

Mohammad has a strict rule that no dogs are allowed there, but when he found street dog Amira, he decided to make an exception and take her in.

When Mohammad learned that Amira was pregnant, he gave the dog her own room and made her as comfortable as possible. Sadly, all of her puppies ended up being stillborn, leaving Amira devastated.

“We were sad and shocked… We gave her a stuffed teddy bear and tried to cuddle with her because she was very sad,” Mohammad said.

Sensing that she may have something in common with Amira, a tiny orphaned named Junior approached her. Junior could sense that Amira also knew what it was like to lose all her loved ones, so she began to rub her face on her in an attempt to comfort the dog. From there, the two became inseparable as Amira took Junior in as her very own!

It didn’t take long for Amira to ditch the teddy bear and start cuddling up to Junior instead. She cared for Junior as if the kitten was one of her own puppies, and as the days wore on, their bond only got stronger.

“We found them playing together, and the kitten climbed on her back, and (Amira) was completely fine and even seemed to be smiling,” Mohammad said.

This unlikely duo is still as close as ever, and they do everything together! Amira watches over everything Junior does, as she needed someone to take care of after losing her puppies.

“I think Amira needs to stay with Junior because her heart was sad after losing her puppies,” Mohammad.

Amira and Junior are living proof that love has no boundaries, and that we can all face devastating grief and come out the other side stronger and more loving than ever.
