There is nothing more powerful than the bond a mother has with her child, and there’s nothing quite like watching a mom and her newborn baby get to know each other.

A new video is going viral showing a gorilla at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo who has just given birth to her new baby. Like any new mom, she just wants to kiss and snuggle with her baby, but she also has another objective as well. As she kisses her baby, she is actually also cleaning him, wiping away any leftover neonatal matter that is still on him.

The mother’s name is Calaya, and she’s a 15 year-old gorilla from the Western Lowlands who now lives at the Smithsonian’s zoo in Washington D.C. Her new baby Moke is a pretty big deal at the zoo, because he is the first male to be born in nine years!

Zookeepers say that when Moke’s father Baraka first saw the boy, he gave a “pleasure rumble,” which is how gorillas show they are happy.

“The birth of this western lowland gorilla is very special and significant, not only to our Zoo family but also to this critically endangered species as a whole,” said Meredith Bastian, curator of primates. “The primate team’s goal was to set Calaya up for success as best we could, given that she is a first-time mother. Doing so required great patience and dedication on the part of my team, and I am very proud of them and Calaya.”

“We were all kind of shaking a little with happiness. It was an amazing moment to share with the team. We were all really close to tears,” she added.
