Grand Canyon University freshman Karen Aguayo was shopping at her local Costco in Arizona with some friends when she noticed a man who had her stopping dead in her tracks.

Karen first noticed that the man needed a motorized shopping cart just to get around the store. However, it was what she saw written on the back of his shirt that really surprised her.

The man, Robert Duran, 67, and his wife have gotten used to the stares, yet they continue to wear the shirt because of the importance of what it says. They wore the shirt day after day hoping that someone like Karen would one day notice it.

Robert has been experiencing kidney failure for years, which requires him to endure dialysis three times a week for four hours at a time. He was finally put on a organ donor list when he was diagnosed with stage five kidney disease, but he was quickly running out of time that fateful day in Costco.

Karen saw that his shirt read, “Kidney donor needed, Type B+, Ask me how.” Intrigued by this, Karen and her friends stopped to ask Robert some questions.

After talking to Robert, she knew she needed to help him, so she posted photos of him and his shirt on Twitter. The post has since gone viral and been retweeted more than 262,000 times.

“Once I read his shirt I felt something in my heart … I decided to post it on social media because I thought maybe someone out there that has a Twitter can donate theirs or just help with a simple retweet to find him a donor,” she explained.

Robert lamented that as hard as this has been for him, it is even harder for his wife.

“It is tearing her apart,” he said. He explained that she agonizes every time the phone rings, wondering if this would be the call that finally saves her husband’s life.

Robert and his wife have new hope now after Karen’s post went viral, and they can’t believe that a simple trip to Costco may be what saves him. Today, Robert refers to Karen as “a saint.”

“I think the Lord brought them down for me,” he said of the college student and her friends.
