When Kaley Zappini bought a large property in Florida three years ago, she decided she wanted to turn her land into a sanctuary for unwanted animals.

“I was in heaven having my horses in my backyard. Then I started to do research,” she said. It was then that Kaley discovered “kill pens,” which are places where unwanted farm animals are auctioned off to be slaughtered. She also learned about “mini pigs,” which is a term used for pigs who are sold as babies and abandoned once they grow up.

Disturbed by this, Kaley started Bentley’s Barnyard Rescue which is a place where animals get all of the love they need.

Kaley came up with this idea one day when she was browsing Craigslist and found an ad from a backyard breeder that was raising pigs. He was trying to sell a female pig named Kahlua because he did not want her anymore.

“I found her on Craigslist advertised as a ‘good BBQ’ pig,” Kaley said. “Of course, seeing her little face I had to reach out.”

When Kaley contacted the owner, he explained to her that Kahlua was too small to be used for breeding, so he had to get rid of her. Kaley immediately bought the pig to save her from being slaughtered and becoming “BBQ.”

Kaley thought she was just saving one pig’s life, which is why it came as a surprise to her weeks later when she went to check on Kahlua and found eight little piglets nursing on her big belly! Kahlua had been pregnant all along, unbeknownst to anyone!

“I walked out to an AMAZING surprise,” Kaley said. “They are all healthy and happy!”

Seeing the little piglets made Kaley want to ensure that their mother had somewhere safe to raise them.

“She was really skittish the first week or so, but finally realized that I was not the bad person — in fact, I was the nice lady brining the fruit salad every morning,” Kaley said. “She absolutely loves belly rubs!”

The entire family can now grow up in peace in Kaley’s rescue sanctuary! They have also become good friends with Blue, the first pig Kaley rescued.

“Blue was beyond excited to have another one of his kind and they have been inseparable since!” she said. “Blue is such a good daddy to these babies.”

“He loves the babies,” Kaley said. “He treats them as his own and helps keep them close to Mom. He even lays next to their little nest.”

Kaley loves having a front row seat to watch this little family of pigs grow up! If you would like to donate to Kaley’s rescue sanctuary, you can do so by visiting their donation page.
