Roy and Bernita Rogers wanted nothing more than to have a big family as soon as they got married. Sadly, Bernita gave birth prematurely to each of their first three babies, and all three of them passed away.

Bernita was devasted by each of the deaths, and she began to wonder if she would ever get the family that she craved.

Just when the couple were losing hope, a feisty little stray cat came into their lives. Bernita and Roy adopted the stray and he slowly helped rebuild the grieving couple’s hearts as they poured all the love they had into the kitten they named “Midnight.”

Though black cats like Midnight are typically seen as bad luck, the couple quickly learned he was actually their good luck charm when Bernita got pregnant once again less than a year after taking the kitten in.

With Midnight watching over her during her entire pregnancy, Bernita was finally able to carry her baby to full term and ended up giving birth to a healthy baby girl they named Stacy. However, because they had already lost three children, Bernita and Roy were even more protective of their new baby than most parents are, always keeping her baby monitor handy.

Midnight followed his parents’ lead and kept constant watch over Stacy, making sure that she was always safe.

When Stacy was 6 weeks old, Bernita put her down for a nap, and Midnight immediately started acting strangely. When the cat kept jumping on Bernita, she assumed he was simply jealous that he was no longer the center of attention. It was only when Bernita heard a loud screeching and moaning coming from Stacy’s room that she realized what was really going on.
