Little Princess Charlotte is just two years-old, but she is already about to make history in a huge way.

The royal family just announced that Charlotte will be the first royal in the history of the British monarchy to retain her position in the line of succession even if her new sibling is a boy. No other princess has ever done this before!

Until this announcement, male heirs had priority over females in the British royal family regardless of birth order. Queen Elizabeth was only able to take the throne in 1952 because she had no brothers! She was named queen only because she was the older of the two daughters of King George VI.

When Elizabeth’s youngest two sons Andrew and Edward were born, they bumped their older sister Princess Anne down behind them in the line of succession.

It was only in 2011 that the British government proposed changes to the royal succession laws that would see the order of succession for people born after October 28, 2011, governed by absolute primogeniture. From now on, the line of succession will be determined solely by birth order, regardless of gender.

So here’s some of my favourite photos of 2017❤

Even if Charlotte gets a little brother when her mother Kate Middleton gives birth later this month, she will retain her position as fourth in line to the throne. She’s already making history, and she’s barely out of diapers!

She was so little here? September 2016
