Most of us never think twice about what color our urine is, but the truth is that urine color is actually one of the most tell-tale signs of your well-being and overall lifestyle.

The color of your urine color reveals everything from what you eat and drink to the diseases you may have.

UC San Diego Health explained that urine is made up of 95% water, with the rest of it being many different ingredients including sodium, chloride, urea, and creatinine. The health center stated that urine is most commonly yellow because of urobilin, which is a biochemical waste product that is generated from the breakdown of your body’s old red blood cells.

Here’s what each of the main urine colors say about your health, according to UC San Diego Health.

Transparent: This color urine means your body may be OVER-hydrated. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, over-hydration can eventually dilute essential salts that can create a chemical imbalance in your blood.

Pale: This color of urine is very normal and means you are well-hydrated.

Yellow: This color of urine also is totally normal and healthy.

Honey or Amber: This color of urine signifies that you are dehydrated. Dena Rifkin MD, a staff nephrologist at UC San Diego Health, says that if your urine is this color, you should simply drink more water until it returns to it’s normal coloring.

Red: If your urine is red, you should see a doctor immediately, as this is a sign of infection, kidney stones or even a tumor in the urinary tract. It can also mean you have an issue with your prostate.

Dark Brown or Black: The UC San Diego says that this color of urine can either be fine or very bad. Some harmless causes of this color include certain medications, large amounts of fava beans, rhubarb, and aloe. However, dangerous causes of this colored urine would be copper or phenol poisoning or melanoma. If your urine turns dark brown or black, you would probably be safer consulting with your doctor immediately.
