As a photographer in Alaska, Tim Newton often sees wildlife walking around his property. However, one morning he woke up to see a very surprising sight outside of his window that he had never seen before!

As Tim was sleeping the night before, he had no idea that a family of lynx was making his front porch their new hang out spot! He was finally woken up by the loud noises they were making.

“It was right near dawn. I heard some noises; it was like something scrambling on the deck,” Tim recalled. “Coming out of my slumber, I thought, ‘What the heck is that?’ So I put on my bathrobe and slowly eased back the curtain. And right there, 2 feet away, was a lynx kitten. He was sitting there watching his siblings race by.”

Tim noticed three or four lynx running around his deck playing with each other. He knew he had to capture this incredible moment on camera!

“They were running back and forth, pouncing on each other,” Tim said. “I started snapping away. I thought, ‘Wow! What incredible luck. This just beats all. This is just wonderful!”

This is even more amazing given the fact that lynx are known for being elusive creatures who typically try and stay away from humans.

Tim had seen these animals from afar in their natural habitat of the woods, but he never expected to see them on his deck! The lynx ran off after a few minutes, and Tim figured their playtime had ended. However, it turns out they were just getting started, as the mother lynx then called her children to come and join her. Seconds later, seven lynx kittens ran onto Tim’s deck!

“I’ve never seen so many lynx,” he said. “To see all these lynx on my deck, I was gobsmacked.”

The lynx were so busy playing that they didn’t even notice Tim snapping their photos.

“They started to play again,” Tim said. “For the next 40 minutes, they all played on my deck. They were chasing each other, rolling and wrestling.”

He was struck by how patient the mother lynx was with her rowdy kittens.

“She has her hands full,” he said. “I’ve concluded that lynx must spend 1 percent of their waking lives chasing rabbits, and 99 percent chasing their kids. What a handful!”

When one approached the window curiously, Tim was able to capture a photo of a lynx head-on and up close!

“I don’t know why I did this — maybe to say to him, ‘Oh, what a cute little kitty!’ — but I pulled the camera away from my face a little, and my eyes showed,” Tim said. “The look of terror on that kitten’s face! His eyes were wide open, and he just flew away from me! But the others didn’t pick up on it.”

The mother eventually rounded up her lynx kittens and headed back into the forest, putting an end to a day that Tim will never forget!
