Former President George H. W. Bush contracted a bacterial infection that spread to his blood and was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital on Sunday for intensive care.

Doctors say that complications of the infection can lead to sepsis which is potentially life-threatening. Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to the infection that can cause tissue and organ failure.

“President Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital yesterday after contracting an infection that spread to his blood,” the statement read. “He is responding to treatments and appears to be recovering. We will issue additional updates as events warrant.”

Bush was admitted to the hospital on Sunday following the funeral of his beloved wife, former First Lady, Barbara Bush. The couple’s endearing love for one another lasted 73 years, a true love story that inspired so many Americans along with 2,500 Houstonians who paid their respect during the public viewing of Barbara Bush’s casket on Friday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bush Sr. and his family during this difficult time.
