If you spend some nights tossing and turning and just can’t seem to get comfortable, have you ever thought that it might be due to the temperature of the room? While we may not want to jump into a bed that’s cold as ice, experts say there is a perfect temperature to go to sleep in.

Experts say that ideally the temperature of the room should be between 60 and 67 degrees. Anything over 75 degrees or under 54 degrees can be uncomfortable and disrupt sleep. Why you ask? Doctors say that the body have natural peaks and drops in temperature during a 24 hour period.

When we lay down to sleep our body’s temperature naturally decreases, so having the room at a cooler temperature can help you doze off faster. There are additional health benefits to having the room cool when you sleep besides getting to sleep faster.

You may also experience a more restful night of sleep as well. If your body isn’t trying to constantly regulate its temperature, then it can focus on simply resting at night instead. These temperatures also increase your body’s production of melatonin, which acts as an anti-aging hormone. There really is such a thing as beauty rest.

Keeping your room temperature a cool 66 degrees allows your body to burn more fat, according to research. At this temperature your body will decrease white fat, but increase brown fat. Brown fat is good fat that helps your body burn fat instead of store it.

While running your air condition year round may not be the most economical option for keeping your room cool, there are other options to help you lower the temperature and get a good night’s sleep. Experts say that having a programmable thermostat to turn down your air conditioner during the day, but up at night may be your best bet.

Other options include sleeping naked, keeping the top sheet in the freezer and putting it on the bed right before you go to sleep, use a cooling pillow, turn on a fan in your room, and stick one or both feet out of the covers as you sleep.
