Watermelon just might be the most popular and refreshing fruit during the summer time.

The juicy, ripe fruit quenches your thirst and your sweet tooth all at the same time even though it’s nutritious too.

The only frustrating thing about this delicious fruit is finding the ripest, sweetest, and juiciest one.

While it may seem like finding the best tasting watermelon is strictly up to chance, that’s actually not the case.

There are several surprising tips that can help you choose the watermelon that you will like the most. Check out the list below so you’ll be ready to pick out the tastiest one this summer.

1. Field Spot: When looking at a watermelon you see the green and sometimes even striped looking outer flesh, but you’ll also see an odd white or yellow colored spot on one side.

That spot is called a field spot and not only is it natural, it’s a tell-tale sign of the taste of the fruit inside.

A field spot is created where the side of the melon touched the ground while growing. The best watermelons have a yellow or gold colored field spot.

2. Webbing: The webbing on a watermelon is based on how many bees touched the flower on the vine before the melon was formed.

In this case, the more the merrier because more pollination means sweeter fruit.

3. Gender: Did you know that some watermelons are boys and some are girls? Neither did we, but girl watermelons tend to be sweeter while boy watermelons are more watery.

Boy watermelons are skinnier, but longer and more oval in length while girl watermelons take on a more rounded appearance.

4. Size: Yes, size does matter. While you may think you get more bang for your buck, that’s not the case with watermelon.

Don’t pick out one that’s either too big or too small. The best watermelons are those that are average in size.

5. Tail: Look at the tail on the watermelon. If it’s tail is green, it was picked too early and won’t be a sweet. The best watermelons have a brown tail.

Hope this helps you to pick out the perfect watermelon! Enjoy!!
