We all enjoy eating a good tasty dish. Some of us even enjoy cooking those yummy food, but how many of us know where some of our favorite foods come from. Of course, we know that most of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we like to eat come from plants, but do you know what those plants look like?

You might be super surprised to know that one of the most popular nuts doesn’t grow on a tree. Instead, it sprouts under the ground and has to be dug up to be harvested. A favorite tropical fruit also finds its roots in the ground, not from a tree like most would think.

That tasty tropical fruit is the pineapple. While many tropical fruits grow on trees, the pineapple comes from a short spiky bush that tops off with the tasty pineapple that we love. Artichokes are another food that you might be surprised to know grows from the ground. It stems from a feathery purple flower.

The little seeds that don the tops of hamburger buns, known as sesame seeds, are also surprising in how they grow. They grow on plants that form little pods, kind of like peas, but instead of having peas on the inside, the pods of a sesame plant have the tiny little seeds.

Brussel sprouts are part of the cabbage family, which is not surprising considering they look just like little tiny heads of cabbage. What’s surprising is how they grow. The plant sprouts up tall and is covered in bunches of tiny brussel sprouts.

Capers are part of a pretty white flower, but are actually the buds of the flower before they open. Vanilla also comes from a plant with long, white flowers. This plant forms long pods that are dried and used for cooking.

The nut that grows in the ground like a potato that was mentioned at the start of this article is the peanut. The tasty nut grows under ground and is dug up when harvested. Cashews are another nut with a weird growing habit. The cashew tree forms fruit called cashew apples and the nut that we eat grows out of the bottom of the apple.

The seasoning that we use to flavor baked goods like oatmeal cookies and cinnamon rolls, isn’t what you think it is. Cinnamon is simply the bark of a tree. Cocoa is another seasoning that comes from a tree. It is found in big pods that grow on the tree.

While some of our favorite foods might have unique beginnings, they’re still tasty all the same. The next time you’re cooking, you’ll know exactly where these special foods came from.
