In the course of his duties as a police officer, Justin Frye encounters numerous reminders of his past life as a soldier.

However, nothing could have prepared him for the flood of memories that came rushing back when he recently stumbled upon an old photograph.

The image, taken 24 years ago in Bosnia, was a poignant reminder of a friendship forged in the unlikeliest of places—between a Canadian soldier and a young Bosnian refugee.

In 1994, Justin was deployed to Bosnia as part of a United Nations mission.

His assignment brought him to the city of Visoko, where he was responsible for providing security for UN helicopters at a military base.

Amidst the chaos and devastation of a war-torn region, it was here that Justin met Amir Bajramovic, a 10-year-old boy whose life had been upended by the conflict.

Separated by a barbed wire fence, the two began an improbable friendship. Amir, a curious child from a nearby village, was fascinated by the military operations on Justin’s side of the fence. For Justin, the connection was immediate and profound.

“So I found myself gravitating toward Amir and looking forward to spending time with him,” Justin reflected.

“When you see the children, there is a personal side to the conflict there. I felt bad for them, and I knew they didn’t have a lot of things, so I started to bring candies for Amir. And soon he started to recognize me.”

Justin’s empathy for Amir and the other children in the area extended beyond casual interactions.

Wanting to do something more for the boy, Justin wrote to his mother back in Canada, asking her to send items that could bring some joy to Amir’s life. His mother obliged, and Justin soon had a small collection of gifts to share with his young friend.

“Amir did not speak English, but the excitement was obvious by his big smile and the look in his eyes,” Justin recounted.

The gifts—a set of pencils, crayons, and a blue Timex Indiglo watch—might have been simple, but they meant the world to Amir.

In a place where scarcity and loss were the norm, these tokens of kindness were a beacon of hope. The bond between Justin and Amir, forged through these small acts of generosity, was one that would stay with Justin long after he left Bosnia.

As the years passed, life moved on for both Justin and Amir. Justin returned to Canada and eventually transitioned from military service to a career in law enforcement.

Yet, the memory of the little boy he had befriended in Bosnia lingered, a quiet reminder of the connections that can be made even in the darkest of times.

Recently, while sifting through old photos, Justin came across the picture he had taken with Amir all those years ago.

The sight of it stirred something deep within him. It was as though the universe was nudging him, urging him to reconnect with his old friend. Motivated by this thought, Justin embarked on a quest to find Amir.

With the help of Bosnian reporter Senad Hajilovac, Justin’s search did not take long. Senad quickly located Amir’s sister, who was still living in the area, and she provided Amir’s contact information.

With this, Justin reached out to Amir through Facebook, sending him a message that included the old photograph and the simple caption, “Visoko,” a word that translates to “hello.”

The response was swift and joyful. The little boy who had once looked up at Justin from behind a barbed wire fence was now a 34-year-old man living in Sweden with his wife and young daughter.

The years had changed much, but the bond between them had not diminished.

“It was a wonderful feeling and it was a feeling that I’ve been looking forward to experiencing for 24 years now. I am very pleased to have added my newest Facebook friend, Amir Bajramovic, today,” Justin shared, the emotion evident in his words.

The two men spoke of reuniting in person, this time on the same side of the fence. It was a reunion that both had longed for, a chance to bring full circle a connection that had begun in the midst of war.

“Sometimes it is the small things,” Justin reflected, summing up the profound truth of their story. In a world often defined by division and conflict, it is the small acts of kindness and the bonds we form that remind us of our shared humanity.

Justin and Amir’s story is a testament to the enduring power of human connection, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

It is a reminder that no matter how much time passes, the friendships we make—especially those born out of compassion—can stand the test of time. As Justin and Amir prepare to reunite, their story serves as an inspiration to us all, a beacon of hope that shines through the darkness of our world.

This touching story of a soldier and a refugee reuniting after 24 years is a powerful reminder of the impact that kindness and compassion can have, even in the most challenging circumstances.

It is a story worth sharing, as it speaks to the best of humanity and the bonds that connect us all.
