Sandra Bullock has been a household name since the 1980’s, but the popular actress isn’t your average movie star. She does her best to stay out of the limelight when she’s off the screen, but she really might be America’s sweetheart with the way she’s used her fortune to help others throughout her career.
In 2001 when the United States was reeling from the September 11 attacks in New York, Bullock stepped in to do what she could do. She donated one million dollars to Red Cross to assist in rescue efforts and help those affected at the heart of the attack.
When the tsunami struck Indonesia in 2004, Bullock stepped in again to assist Red Cross with another one million dollar donation. The tsunami killed some 230,000 people in Indonesia and left thousands of people homeless.
In 2005, Bullock came forward yet again to assist Red Cross when Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana. Some 1,833 people were killed in the monster hurricane, and thousands of other people lost their homes and belongings. Bullock donated one million dollars to aid relief efforts.
When the devastating earthquake struck the tiny island of Haiti in 2010, Bullock donated one million dollars to Doctors Without Borders. This international humanitarian organization assists communities that are threatened by violence, disease, disaster, and other health emergencies. They were one of the first groups to set foot in Haiti after the earthquake.
Shortly after the earthquake in Haiti, Bullock changed her focus to being a mother. She adopted her son Louis, and would adopt a daughter, Laila, two years later. Both of the children are natives of Louisiana. Bullock has worked to make her kids lives as normal as possible shuttling them back and forth to school her self, attending PTA meetings like other mothers, and taking them to do normal kid activities like going to the zoo and the movies.
Bullock started the adoption process of Louis with her now ex-husband Jesse James. Her very public divorce from James, after he was caught cheating on her, didn’t change her adoption plans. She brought Louis home herself, and at the insistence of her son, adopted her daughter on her own as well.
In 2017, Bullock stepped back into the humanitarian game with another donation to Red Cross. When Hurricane Harvey devastated the Houston, TX area, she donated one million dollars to assist in helping the overwhelmed community.
“I’m just grateful I can do it,” said Bullock about her donations over the years. “We have to take care of one another.” Bullock has proven that her stardom hasn’t gone to her head. She may be one of the sweetest Hollywood stars of all time.
