Dennis Quaid is a household name, an American actor who first garnered fame during the 1980s, then disappeared to deal with his demons of addiction and anorexia, and reemerged in the late 1990s with successful movies like Wyatt Earp (1994) and Dragon Heart (1996). He has survived the roller-coaster rejection of Hollywood, personal tragedies, three marriages and yet, Quaid’s faith has never been stronger.

Quaid was brought up in a religious household before Hollywood and fame came along. Parents, Juanita and William Rudy Quaid instilled faith in their children as Quaid stated,

“I grew up in a Baptist church, went to Sunday school, and then I got baptized when I was nine and made the decision the same day as my brother. My brother and I, Randy, were both baptized on the same day.”

Like most stories we hear out of Hollywood, Quaid became another casualty of drug addiction and an eating disorder. But through reflection and hard work, Quaid has overcome his obstacles as he struggles to reconnect with his faith.

“The question I had as I went around the world was ‘Who is God?’ I became a seeker really… I read the Bible cover to cover. For me, it’s Jesus… it’s the red words of Jesus. How simple it is. There really is redemption and that was the inspiration.”

In his most recent movie, I Can Only Imagine, Quaid delves deeper into his faith which helps him to finish a song for his 91-year-old mother who has been the biggest support for the actor. His song, On My Way To Heaven, is about finding grace and knowing that Jesus can bring redemption to every human and every soul.

Quaid’s testament to the power of faith is certainly refreshing since we often don’t hear these stories out of Hollywood. Learn more about Quaid’s faith in the video below:
