Elephants are known for being some of the most intelligent and compassionate creatures in the animal kingdom. Numerous studies have shown that elephants are capable of a wide range of human emotion, including grief, which they feel very deeply.

A new video is going viral showing the many emotions elephants experience every day, including empathy, grief, altruism, and love.

Filmed at Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, the video opens with a little female elephant being trapped in an irrigation canal. The baby’s mother starts to become frantic, as she can see that lions are watching the scene unfold just waiting for a chance to pounce.

The mother eventually became so frantic that the rest of the animals became stressed and chased her away, leaving the baby abandoned.

Later on, a new herd of elephants comes upon the terrified baby, who is still stuck. Even though the little elephant was from a rival herd, the matriarch of the new herd worked tirelessly to save her for a half an hour until she was finally able to free the baby and reunite her with her mother!

The touching video serves as a reminder that we can all put our differences aside to show compassion for someone who needs help, whether they are from our herd or not!
