A gentleman named Tim boarded a flight at Boston’s Logan airport after visiting his sister. When he boarded the plane he was assigned a middle seat, but the gentleman next to the aisle graciously traded seats with him. Why you ask? Because Tim is both blind and deaf.

Lynette Scribner of Seaside, Oregon, says she was on the same flight as Tim and watched as several people tried to help him, but no one could communicate with him. The flight attendants, desperate to help their passenger, made an announcement asking if anyone on board was able to speak sign language.

One young girl was quick to jump in and help. Clara Daly is just 15-years-old and had been learning ASL for the past year. She has dyslexia and it was the easiest foreign language for her to learn. She didn’t hesitate to reach out and grab Tim’s hands and start talking to him.

For the rest of the flight she assisted Tim and made sure his needs were met, signing one letter at a time into his hand. Tim’s seat mate, who had learned a few signs in the process, was quick to tell Tim yes, when he asked if Clara was pretty.

Clara simply blushed and continued communicating with Tim for the rest of the flight. The passengers in nearby rows were laughing and smiling at the obvious delight that Tim had in having someone he could talk to.

Clara’s kindness is a beautiful reminder that there is still good in this world. Kudos to the Alaska Airline flight attendants, the seat mate, and to Clara for making it a memorable ride for everyone on board.
