Being members of the royal family has required Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle to make some massive lifestyle changes. Middleton had years to prepare for the transition, but for Markle, it was more of a crash course. Luckily, both of them seem to fit in with their respective princes quite well.
With Prince Harry sixth in line to the throne, most of Markle’s royal transition is now complete. However, Prince William and Middleton will both see dramatic changes in their future. When Prince Charles ascends to the throne, they will assume a new duchy, or territory belonging to a duke or duchess, as well as the vast fortunes and titles that go along with it.
They will likely become the Prince and Princess of Wales, the traditional title given to the heir apparent. Prince Charles is currently the Duke of Cornwall, and when he becomes king, Prince William will automatically replace him. When the change takes place, Prince William and Middleton will get a change of title, as well as the profits of the Duchy of Cornwall.

The Duchy of Cornwall was created in 1337 by Edward III and encompasses some 135,000 acres of land and an investment portfolio. The land includes farms, residential, and commercial properties as well as resources such as quarries, rivers, forests, and coastal areas. The current net value is $1.2 billion.
Edward III intended the duchy to be an income for his eldest son, and that is still the purpose today. The duchy has been passed to the eldest son of the British monarch at birth, or when his parents succeeds the throne.

Though Prince William will not be able to sell the duchy, he will be able to live quite comfortably from the profits, just like the 24 Dukes of Cornwall preceding him. In just 2017, Prince Charles earned some $27.3 million from the Duchy.
The title isn’t just about the money, however, Prince Charles has also taken on a hands-on approach to managing the estate. He and his family visit the estate regularly and Prince Charles has helped implement sustainable initiatives like organic farming and renewable energy.

Prince William and Prince Harry have already gotten a taste of the riches from the duchy. Prince Charles has funded his charity the Prince’s Trust, and has used the fortune to support his sons. The princes have also watched their father manage the duchy their whole lives.
If Prince William continues his father’s legacy of nurturing the estate, there will continue to be years of fortune in the family.
