In the middle of the South Winds Golf Club in Southgate, Michigan, there is a pond that is home to a duck named Stella. In May 2018, Chris Grandy, a professional golfer who works at the course, noticed that Stella had laid nine eggs. He was careful not to disturb her and a few weeks later, nine healthy baby ducks appeared.

The family of 10 was happy as could be, but little did they know, their family was about to get much bigger. In June 2018, Denise Desrosiers, an animal control officer, received a call about 10 ducklings that had been stranded on a busy Southgate highway.

Denise went to rescue the babies and their mother was nowhere to be found. Knowing that the babies would never survive on their own, Denise loaded them into a crate and headed to the only place where she knew there were other baby ducklings.

She took them over to the pond at South Winds Golf Club. She asked Grandy if she could add the ducklings to the golf course pond, and since the babies were too little to take care of themselves, he agreed. “So we take them out to the pond, we don’t know what to do. No mother, they’re going to have a problem,” Grandy said.

Denise released the ducklings into the pond and they immediately spotted Stella and her flock. The 10 orphans swam over to Stella and her brood and she immediately accepted the ducklings into her flock. Just like that, Stella’s family had grown from 9 ducklings to 19!

Grady was amazed to see how kind Stella was. “They lost their mom and now they got a new mom. It was the most precious thing I’ve ever witnessed. It was such a motherly thing. It was something I’ve never experienced after 40 years here at the golf course,” he said.

The ducklings have been with Stella for a few weeks and they’re doing great. Stella didn’t hesitate to add the babies into her flock, and thanks to Grandy and Denise, the orphaned babies have found a new mom who is happily taking care of them.
