Savannah Phillips has travelled quite a lot in her life, so she’s used to being onboard airplanes. That’s why she was stunned recently when she had to go through a horrifying encounter thousands of feet in the air.

Savannah, 32, decided to share her story on Facebook after she found herself being rescued by an unlikely person.

When Savannah’s flight to Chicago was changed to an earlier time because of storms, she immediately started to panic, as she knew that it meant she would not be able to choose her seat. Savannah tends to like to sit in her own row on planes for both her own sake and for the comfort of others.

“I’m not the biggest person on the airplane, but I’m not the smallest. My worst nightmare is someone being uncomfortable because they have to sit next to me,” she said.

When Savannah got on the plane, she found that she had been seated next to a man in his 60s who told her he was a comedian. At first, he seemed harmless as he gingerly got up to allow Savannah to slide into her seat. However, he then took out his phone, which had it’s brightness turned all the way up and a large font, and proceeded to rip Savannah apart to a friend via text.

“…he proceeded to text someone that he was sitting next to ‘a smelly fatty,'” Savannah recalled.

Savannah looked away completely crushed. She felt that his words were totally uncalled for, as she is a mother still carrying around some extra pregnancy weight.

“Before I knew it, I could feel hot, salty tears coming down my face. I sat and cried silently, hoping this guy didn’t try to make small talk, because I didn’t trust how I would react and I didn’t want to get kicked off the plane. I was so hurt,” she wrote. “The pilot came overhead and said there would be a 30 minute delay before he could take off- great. Just more time I would have to sit next to this creep.”

Savannah squeezed up against the window as much as she could as she continued to cry. Out of nowhere, a man behind them tapped the comedian on the shoulder and told him that they would be switching seats right away. When the older man asked why he wanted to switched, Savannah’s rescuer replied,  “You are texting about her and I’m not putting up with that.”

The next thing Savannah knew, the comedian was gone and the man who had been behind her was now seated next to her!

“He encouraged me not to let that guy get to me and that everything was going to be fine,” she recalled. “We talked about Ross and the kids, his two year old son, our jobs, amongst other things. He said he just happened to see that guy’s text messages and he started shaking he was so mad and knew he had to do something. He stopped the flight attendant and told her what he was about to do.”

Savannah thanked the man and told him how much he meant to her, and the flight attendant even brought him free drinks as she called him “her hero.”

Savannah explained to the man that her pastor recently told her that God sees everyone in both good times and bad, at our weakest and most confident moments.

“And God saw me today. I told him that he was a blessing sent to me and how thankful I was that he was there,” she concluded.

After Savannah’s story went viral, she was able to track down her rescuer! His name is Chase, and he is an employee of Whiskey Row in Nashville, Tennessee. Savannah now would like everyone to know how amazing Chase is and that there are “more good people in the world than bad.”
