Construction worker Jeff Reick was working his normal shift when he noticed 88 year-old Gloria Porter watching him from her hospital window. During his break, Jeff decided to write the elderly woman a note to make her day a little bit better.

“I saw the lady at the window looking out, I thought it would be a kind gesture just to tell her to get well,” Jeff recounted. “I didn’t think much of it, I just tried to make someone feel a little better.”

Gloria had been hospitalized as she battled a case of pneumonia, and to pass the time, she liked to watch the construction workers work outside her window. Jeff and his team were working on renovating the hospital’s front entrance, which she could see from her room.

Gloria soon noticed that Jeff had left her a note on the side of one of the beams of the hospital entrance. After getting his hands on some chalk, Jeff wrote to her, “Get well.”

Gloria was touched by Jeff’s message, and she knew she had to respond! Grabbing a piece of paper, she wrote “Stay safe” on it and stuck it on her window so that he would see it. Jeff was even more touched by her message than she thought he would be!

“That sign kind of crushed me. I don’t know how she knew ‘Stay safe’, It’s kind of like ironworker lingo to stay safe,” Jeff said. “When I saw ‘Stay safe,’ in the window, I kind of snapped my head around and said (to my coworkers), ‘Did you see that?’”

Thankfully, Gloria was released from the hospital the next day, but hospital staffers made sure to take photos of the messages she shared with Jeff before she left.

“I just try to lead by example and be a good person. I just hope everybody would do things like that because the world is not a very nice place,” Jeff said.
