Jess Hamm, a 30-year-old nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit, was working her normal shift at Wolfson Children’s Hospital in March of 2017 when an abused 14 month-old girl named Delilah was admitted.

Jess was heartbroken to see that Delilah was completely malnourished and suffered from broken bones as well as a fracture to her skull, with all of her injuries being a result of “non-accidental trauma.”

Jess knew there was something special about Delilah the moment she saw her. Though she was tiny and struggling, the little girl was still fighting for her life. Filled with love, Jess picked up Delilah to comfort her, and the baby immediately grabbed her finger.

The seasoned nurse knew right at that moment that she was going to take Delilah home and adopt her. She wanted nothing more than to provide Delilah with all the love she deserved, so she set up a meeting with the caseworkers at the Florida Department of Children and Families. However, when Jess sat down with the caseworkers to sign the paperwork, she learned something about Delilah that changed everything.

The caseworkers informed Jess that Delilah had a twin who was also in desperate need of saving. This left it up to Jess whether she thought she could take on two babies, or if she would separate the twins by only taking Delilah.

This was over a year ago now, and quite a lot has happened in Jess’s house since then! The decision she made has had her being hailed as a hero in her community, and her story is truly inspiring.
