For some kids having a stable home with loving parents and food on the dinner table every night is something they take for granted. But for one little girl, those things are things that she never had the opportunity to know.

Klynn Scales grew up in a house filled with drugs, violence, and neglect. Her and her brothers would have to go to the 7-Eleven store down the street from their house and steal food if they wanted to eat. But there was one thing in Klynn’s life that was good.

Every day one particular police officer would drive by her house and Klynn would wave to him. Each day, he would wave back to the little 9-year-old girl in the window. “He was the one adult I could trust as a kid,” says Klynn.

She didn’t know his name, but he had always told her that he would protect her and her siblings if they ever needed him, and she trusted him to do it. She says the words he spoke to her would come to her during the worst times of her life and she knew she always had someone there for her if she needed it.

One day the officer passed by Klynn’s house, but the little girl wasn’t at the window to wave at him. His gut instincts told him something was wrong. Without hesitation, he stopped and ran into the house. When he got inside, his gut had been right.

He found Klynn laying on the floor. She had collapsed and wasn’t breathing well. He picked up her little body and took her straight to the hospital where she was treated for malnutrition. Klynn later wrote on her Facebook page, “You saved my life, literally.”

Although Klynn can’t remember everything that happened that day, she remembers the halo of light that appeared around the police officer as he stood over her that day. She says not only was he her hero, but he was her guardian angel too. “He was there when I had no one,” she says.

The officers name is Jeff Colvin and he and the little girl had become friends. Unfortunately, the two lost contact when Klynn moved to Texas from Kansas City, Missouri. Nearly two decades later, Klynn wrote about her experience and a woman with the Kansas City Police Department saw the story and searched for the officer.

It didn’t take long before Sgt. Jeff Colvin got an email about a little girl. He was in shock at what he read. “Most times we go through our career without realizing if we truly helped anybody out,” he says. Colvin remembered Klynn and her family and was excited to get to reunited with her.

“I just never thought this would ever happen, to find my hero,” said Klynn. “I am so happy that I was able to thank you in person. ” Klynn says that she hopes one day that she is able to make a positive impact on someone and be a hero to them like he was for her.
