You probably don’t know this, but elephants are actually huge music lovers! They are able to feel the music deeply, and this is evidenced by a ritual shared between a rescued Indian elephant, Faa Mai, and her adoring caretaker Lek Chailert.

Faa Mai bonded with Lek immediately after she was rescued as a baby and brought to the Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand, which Lek founded.

In the video below, you’ll see Lek talking to visitors of the park before Faa Mai redirects her attention to an issue she finds far more pressing. Lek has been singing the 9 year-old elephant lullabies ever since she was a baby, and Faa Mai wanted to make sure that recently rescued baby Thong Ae got the same loving treatment that she did.

Lek began to walk with Faa Mai, allowing herself to be steered by the massive trunk wrapped around her. She admitted that at first, she did not know what Faa Mai wanted.

“I wondered what it was that she really wanted,” Lek said.

Lek finally realized what Faa Mai wanted when she found herself face-to-face with Thong Ae!

“Faa Mai wanted me to lullaby her little friend, as she is so fond when I sing a lullaby to her,” Lek recalled.

Lek explained that Faa Mai looks at Thong Ae as her own child.

“She wants to adopt [her] as her own,” Lek said.
