Most of us try to be good, honest people. In a world that seems to be falling apart, sometimes that can be hard to do. So hard in fact, that some people succumb to the troubles of the world around them. One thing that so commonly gets a grip on even the best people is greed, and the man in this story was no different.
He had worked hard his entire life and earned a lot of money, but instead of controlling that money, he let it control him. He became selfish and greedy and didn’t care how it affected the people around him, including his wife. The legacy that he could have left behind was tainted by his greed.
The man felt that because he had worked so hard for his money that he had the right to take it with him, even when he died. His wife was of strong moral character, but his dying request tested her moral compass. He told her when he died, he wanted her to put all of his money in his casket so that he could take it to the afterlife with him.
He was a true cheapskate, and had treated his wife poorly. He had no regard to her well-being while he was alive, or how his final wish would affect her well-being once he was gone. He simply didn’t care. Greed had taken him over. He made his wife promise that she would put all of his money into the casket when he died, and being the good woman that she was, she agreed to promise.
The day of the funeral came, and the wife, knowing what her husband’s final wishes were, had thought long and hard about granting her husband last demand. At the funeral, as the casket was getting ready to be closed, and her husband’s body laid to rest, she walked up to the coffin and placed a box inside with him.
A close friend looked at her in shock. Was she really going to give the money that she needed to live away to a man who could no longer use it? Her friend said, “I hope you weren’t crazy enough to put all that money in there with that stingy old man.”

The wife nodded her head and said, “Yes I promised. I’m a good Christian and I cannot lie. I promised him that I would put that money in the casket with him.”
The friend was stunned and couldn’t believe what she had just heard. Then his wife went on to say, “I got it all together, put it in my account, and I wrote him a check.”
