We all know that some foods are more associated with illnesses than others, but there are some foods that are much worse than others. Check out this list of foods that the top food experts won’t eat at all, or at minimum, take extra precautions when eating.
1. Undercooked Meat – The number one source of food poisoning is undercooked meat. Most raw poultry contains Campylobacter, but it may also contain salmonella and other bacteria. Cooking meat properly and to the right temperature will kill this bacteria, but unfortunately, you can’t always tell if meat is cooked properly just by looking at it. You have to use a meat thermometer to check to see if the internal temperature has made the meat safe to eat.

2. Leftover Meat – Just because meat has been cooked safely once, doesn’t mean that it’s safe to eat as a leftover. Leftover meat should be refrigerated at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder within 2 hours of preparation. Large cuts of meat should be divided into smaller quantities so they’ll cool quickly enough to keep bacteria from growing. If you don’t take these precautions, you will need to be sure you recook the meat to the proper internal temperature.

3. Canned Foods – If your canned food has been deeply dented, don’t eat it. Experts say that a deep dent is one that you can lay your finger into. These deep dents can damage the seam and allow bacteria to enter the can.

4. Raw (unpasteurized) Milk – Raw milk may carry harmful bacteria that can make you very sick. Pregnant women are particularly at risk for listeriosis because their bodies are less capable of fighting it off. It is also possible for the baby to get sick too. Older adults and people with compromised immune systems are also in danger from the bacteria that can be found in raw milk.

5. Raw Eggs – Eggs may contain salmonella even if they look clean and uncracked. To keep from getting sick, cook eggs until the yolks and whites are firm. Store your eggs at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder and don’t eat foods that contain raw eggs like cookie dough or cake batter.

6. Raw Shellfish – Oysters and other filter-feeding shellfish may contain bacteria and viruses that can make you sick. Raw or undercooked oysters may contain vibrio bacteria and oysters harvested from contaminated water can contain the norovirus. To avoid food poisoning, always cook your seafood.

7. Unwashed Fruits and Vegetables – While it’s important to eat fresh produce for your health, you should always wash your produce carefully. People with compromised immune systems are especially susceptible to the bacteria that some fruits and veggies can carry so you should wash your produce twice before eating it. Even if you peel your fruits and vegetables, you are likely touching the peel and then the fruit, which means that the fruit could still be contaminated if you didn’t wash it first.

8. Raw Flour – I know you’re wondering who eats raw flour anyway, but think of all the times you’ve eaten raw cookie dough. Harmful germs can contaminate the grain that makes flour while it’s still in the field. Once you cook the flour, you’re safe from the germs, but if you haven’t cooked the flour, you could be at risk for getting sick.

9. Raw Sprouts – Yes, sprouts are a healthy food, but they are grown in warm, wet conditions making them a petri dish for germs. Thoroughly cooking the sprouts will kill the germs. If you like to eat them raw on your sandwiches and salads, you might want to think again.
