Are you the type of person who likes to save space in your refrigerator for fresh products? Do you throw anything that isn’t dairy, meat, or fresh vegetable and fruit into your pantry? If so, you could be spoiling some of your favorite foods.
Read on for this list of foods that surprisingly should be kept in your refrigerator or freezer rather than stored away in your pantry.
1. Tomato Sauce – If you stocked your pantry full of tomato sauce the last time it was on sale, that’s fine. But once you open it, it should always go in the fridge. In the old days, people were told to keep tomato sauce in the pantry, but products have gotten a lot healthier and they typically have less preservatives in them. It’s best to keep this one in the fridge.

2. Dijon Mustard – Although your favorite hot dog condiment won’t spoil if you keep it in the pantry, it may lose some of its flavor. It will last longer and keep the flavor you love longer if you keep it in the fridge instead.

3. Bananas – If you leave your bananas in the pantry, they just keep ripening. When they are ready to eat, put them in the fridge. Even if the peels turn brown they’ll still be good to eat.

4. Salami – You already know that keeping raw meat like beef and chicken in the fridge is a must. The same applies for cured meats like salami. Studies have shown that 23 percent of 1,020 dry Italian salami samples contained Listeria monocytogenes.

5. Pure Maple Syrup – If you love pure maple syrup, you need to keep it in the fridge. Unlike the types of syrup that are just maple flavored, pure maple syrup needs to be kept in the fridge to prevent mold. If you want it to last indefinitely, keep it in the freezer. It won’t freeze solid.

6. Chocolate Syrup – Maple syrup isn’t the only syrup that you should be keeping in the refrigerator. If you leave your chocolate syrup in the pantry it will go bad. One exception is Nesquik syrup because it doesn’t contain high fructose corn syrup. If you refrigerate it, it will crystallize.

7. Corn on the Cob – This summer time staple should either be cooked right away or stored in the fridge. If stored at room temperature it can lose up to 50 percent of its sugar content. If you opt to refrigerate it, eat it within two days for the best taste.

8. Whole Grain Flour – Any type of whole grain flour is healthier than all-purpose white flour, but because the oils and bran they contain can spoil quickly, these whole grain flours must be stored in the fridge or freezer.

9. Butter – If you leave your butter on the counter because it stays soft and spreads easily, you may be growing a container full of bacteria. Only salted butter should be left out of the fridge because the salt can keep bacteria at bay. If you leave it out of the fridge, it should only be left out for two weeks at the most.

10. Jam and Jelly – If you leave jam and jelly on the counter, you could be at risk for making yourself sick. Smucker’s says that any opened fruit spreads left unrefrigerated for 48 hours should not be used.

11. Organic Peanut Butter – Most peanut butter is safe to store in the pantry, but if your peanut butter is natural or organic, the oils can separate and turn rancid. These types of peanut butters should be kept in the fridge. Same goes for other types of organic nut butters too.

12. Nuts – Since nuts have the same oils as nut butters, they need to be refrigerated for the same reason. Nuts will stay fresh in the fridge for up to six months, or up to one year in the freezer.

13. Fresh Herbs – While basil is okay to keep in the pantry, most other herbs need to stay in the fridge to stay fresh. Hardy herbs like thyme and rosemary should be washed, wrapped in a dam paper towel, wrapped in plastic, and kept in your crisper drawer. Soft herbs like cilantro, dill, and parsley should be kept in a plastic bag in the fridge.

14. Opened Red Wine – If you open and recork a bottle of red wine, it should be kept in the fridge to stay fresh for another day. The cold temperature will slow down the oxidation process and keep your wine fresh.

15. Coconut Oil – Just like oils in nuts and nut butters, coconut oil can go rancid if left at room temperature for too long. Keep this kitchen staple in the refrigerator instead of the pantry.

16. Tortillas – You may not realize it, but tortillas are prone to molding. They will stay good for about a week in your pantry, but if you keep them in the fridge they’ll last much longer.

Now that you’ve read this list, do you need to go clean out your pantry? We definitely do! Be sure to share this with your friends and family so they won’t get sick from storing the wrong foods in their pantry.
