Wild animals belong in the wild, but sometimes, not every creature is equipped to endure the harshness of the outdoor world. One deer family was torn apart when the mother realized that one of her babies wasn’t as healthy as the other.

Darius Sasnauskas lives near Yellowstone National Park and since his house isn’t surrounded by fencing, it’s not uncommon for him to see animals roaming through his yard. He loves wildlife and enjoys watching the animals pass through.

One day while watching the wonders of the outside world, three deer stepped onto his property. It was a mother deer and her two babies. It didn’t take long for Darius to realize that something was wrong with one of the babies. She was having trouble keeping up and seemed to be struggling to walk.

The doe, fearful for her and her other baby’s life, had no choice but to leave her injured little one behind. If she tried to keep the injured little one, she might not be able to protect herself and the other baby. Darius watched as the mother and other baby left behind the injured fawn.

Once they were gone, Darius made it his mission to help the tiny fawn. He took her into his home and provided her with protection and a comfortable place to stay. Luckily, his other pets were more than accommodating to the family’s newcomer.

“I kept a close eye on her most of the time through the night,” said Darius. “It was the next morning that I brought her inside. My old cats and dogs are all super friendly. They were just kind of curious at first. It took them one day and it was fine. No problem at all.”

With the worry of how his other pets would react, Darius began focusing on nursing the fawn back to health. Her left leg joint seemed strained, so he made her a brace from an oatmeal box. He says it gave her pretty good support and after about five days she started getting better.

It wasn’t long after that she was up and walking just fine, so he decided it was time to return her to the wild. Darius took the fawn out each night looking for her biological mother but never had any luck. He began to worry that he wouldn’t be able to reunite her with her family.

Then Darius had to leave for town, so he locked his dogs up and left for a few days. During that time, the mother returned to her lost little one. She took her baby away and began nursing her. Darius says his friends that were watching the baby said her mother showed up the first night so they released her.

The mother quickly accepted her little one back into the family. Darius says he is happy to have been able to help the sweet little one and hopes she has the best of luck in her adventures for years to come.

“I’m sure she has a better life right now with her real family and being in the wild where she belongs,” he says. “I hope she is being safe and having a great life.”
