There’s nothing easy about being a parent, and one of the hardest parts about it is dealing with the screaming temper tantrums of a small child. This can be made even worse when the child is throwing a fit in a public place.

As a single mother in England, Sammie Welch learned quickly that keeping her son occupied is the best way to avoid him throwing a temper tantrum.

Sammie was recently sitting on a train with her 3 year-old son Rylan when a stranger sat down next to them. Sammie did her best to keep Rylan occupied during the long ride, as she didn’t want his to disturb the other passengers. To pass the time, Sammie played games with Rylan and asked him questions about his day to keep his mind busy. She even gave him a quick lesson about how to behave on a train.

Eventually, the man sitting next to them got up to get off at his stop. Before he did, he handed Sammie a note that she soon realized was wrapped around a five pound note!

“Have a drink on me, you’re a credit to your generation, polite and teaching the little boy good manners,” the note read.

The man wrote on the back of the note, “P.S. I have a daughter your age, someone did the same for her once. Hope when she has children she is as good a mother as you.”

Sammie burst into tears after reading the note, as she was so touched by what it said. She posted the photos on Facebook in the hopes of finding the man, and even went to her local newspaper to ask for help. She was finally able to find him and discovered that he was Ken Saunders, a 50-year-old man who worked as a project manager.

He said he was stunned when he saw the story about his note in the newspaper!

“I just couldn’t believe it. There was this massive story. It was quite surreal and I texted my daughter Romani to warn her I’d done something embarrassing yet again,” he said.

When Sammie was reunited with Ken, she had the chance to thank him personally for the note and tell him how much it meant to her.

“I worry I’m not doing a good job with Rylan all the time – all the time. I worry, am I too hard on him? Am I too soft on him? I try so hard to get it right. So for someone to say I’m doing a good job means everything,” she said.
