Two men have been targeting elderly residents of Huntsville, Alabama. They are walking up to peoples’ doors, and when they see that an elderly person lives there, they go to work with the equipment they have brought along with them.

Before you get worried, you should know that 26-year-old Rodney Smith Jr. and his team are not scamming the elderly. Instead, they are doing a great service to them by helping them keep their yards clean!

Rodney started the non-profit business Raising Men Lawn Care back in 2015, when he noticed an elderly man struggling to take care of his lawn.

“My father always told me, ‘If you have an idea, go for it,’” Rodney said. “When I saw that man, it hit me. I felt I needed to do something and I went for it.”

That’s when Rodney began offering his lawn-care services to the elderly for free. Since then, he has expanded his business to include those who are disabled or in need of an extra hand like single mothers, wanting to help absolutely anyone who is in need.

Rodney founded the business with his friend Terrence Stroy, and they have recruited twenty young men to help them.

“It was amazing to see how many people were actually in need of help,” he said. “You have no idea what someone could need unless you extend a hand.”

Rodney immigrated to America from Bermuda when he was 16, and he wanted to share some of his home nation’s friendly mentality with the people of Alabama.

“When you come from a country with less than 65,000 people, everyone knows everyone, so everyone helps each other,” Rodney said. “We call it ‘the Bermudian way.’ It’s a culture of giving back, of paying it forward.”

On top of everything else his business does, Rodney also mentors young people!

“They’re young, but they say, ‘It’s cool to give back.’ They see the faces of the single mothers, or the senior citizens when they finish the job and they know they’ve made a difference as part of a team,” he said. “That makes them feel good, and I think it puts a good head on their shoulders.”
